About Us

Our Mission

Our commitment to our patients is to utilize a variety of therapies and non-addicting medications to control pain and restore quality of life in an environment of compassion and integrity.

About Pain Relief of Dayton
(formerly known as Dayton Pain Med)

Pain Relief of Dayton is an outpatient interventional spine and pain management center, specializing in the treatment of chronic pain. We offer minimally invasive interventional procedures for spinal pain and many other painful conditions. Many of our clients find relief within hours and require no further treatment.

At Pain Relief of Dayton you can expect to receive state-of-the-art therapies for pain control in a comfortable and relaxed environment. In addition, we offer advanced pain therapy procedures that may require treatment in an operating room environment in a local hospital setting.

Our goal is to utilize a wide array of therapies and non-addicting medications to control pain. Through this program we hope to control your pain with fewer medications and hopefully decrease or even avoid your reliance on painkillers (i.e. opioids). We understand that some states of pain may not respond to our interventions and may require chronic opioid therapy, that is why we work closely with your primary care physician to recommend a medication regimen that both you and your doctor will be comfortable with. Together your primary care physician and Pain Relief of Dayton can help you deal with your pain better and get you on your way to a more productive and enjoyable life.

When being referred by a physician, an initial workup of your condition has been started. Sending copies of these workups and of any existing medical records or X-ray reports will be helpful. This information will help us to evaluate your painful condition thoroughly and design a thoughtful treatment regimen with the goal of reducing your pain and increasing your quality of life. You can expect to receive a regimen that is unique to your condition but consistent with current recommendations. We offer a wide range of alternatives to chronic medications but often we will use both procedural therapies and chronic medications to control your pain. When indicated we may even refer you to a physical therapist or a health psychologist for alternative treatment modalities for your pain.

Non-physician referrals are always welcome.

Services Offered

Pain Relief Treatments

We offer a wide array of procedures for managing your pain that include:

ACUPUNCTURE
The placement of metal needles into the skin and muscles in order to relieve pain. Electrical stimulation may be applied to the needles.

TRIGGER POINT INJECTION
The injection of local anesthetics and anti-inflammatory medication into muscles to relieve tight, achy muscles.

BOTOX® INJECTIONS (for pain)
The injection of BOTOX® into muscles or near nerve endings in order to decrease muscle spasm pain. These may also be used for headaches or migraines.

NERVE BLOCKS
The injection of local anesthetics and/or steroid medication in the vicinity of nerves in order to decrease pain from an area of the body. These can be therapeutic or diagnostic.

JOINT INJECTION
The injection of local anesthetics and/or anti-inflammatory medications into joints in order to decrease inflammation and pain within joints.

EPIDURAL STEROID INJECTION
The injection of steroid into the spinal canal in order to decrease inflammation and pain in the area of pinched nerves, ruptured discs, or bone spurs.

DISCOGRAPHY
The injection of X-ray dye into a disc in a patient’s spine in order to see if that disc is abnormal and a source of pain. This is a diagnostic test only.

RADIOFREQUENCY TREATMENT
The placement of a needle and probe near nerves to subject the nerves to heat or electrical current in order to decrease pain from those nerves.

VERTEBROPLASTY
Osteoporosis results in brittle bones and this can lead to the fracture of spinal vertebrae. The pain from these vertebral compression fractures is extreme. Vertebroplasty works by stabilizing the collapsed vertebra using a special formulated acrylic bone cement. This is an outpatient procedure, no surgery, and requires only a local anesthetic. Most patients experience pain relief within hours, and can resume their daily activities within 48 hours.

TRANSDISCAL BIACULOPLASTY
Specialized probes are inserted into a degenerated and painful lumbar disc. Electrical energy is applied to the probes and a portion of the disc is carefully heated. This can numb the abnormal and painful portion of the disc thereby reducing the back pain.

PROLOTHERAPY/REGENERATIVE INJECTION THERAPY
The physician will introduce natural growth stimulants into the painful and damaged, inflamed, arthritic cells. This process can induce natural regeneration of ligaments, tendons and cartilage in joints. Injecting the substance causes a reaction, which stimulates a natural healing process and growth of collagen.

SPINAL ENDOSCOPY and ADHESIOLYSIS
The insertion of a steerable catheter, with a fiberoptic viewing scope inside it, into the spinal canal. The contents of the spinal canal can be assessed and scarring (adhesions) may be broken up (adhesiolysis).

INTRADISCAL ELECTROTHERMAL THERAPY (IDET)
The placement of a needle and a coil into an abnormal, painful disc. The coil is then heated and this may burn painful nerves in the disc and change the structure of the cartilage in the disc such that it becomes stiffer. This can help back pain due to degenerated discs.

PERCUTANEOUS DISC DECOMPRESSION
The placement of a needle and a probe into a bulging disc. The probe can remove or vaporize a portion of the internal contents of the disk. The internal pressure of the disc may decrease and the pressure on a pinched nerve may be lessened, thereby decreasing sciatica pain.

SPINAL CORD STIMULATION
The placement of a wire electrode into the spinal canal and overlying the spinal cord. The electrode can then deliver electrical impulses to the spinal cord, which should result in a decrease of your pain.

PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES
We offer in-house clinical health psychology services, provided by Milton Becknell Ph.D., ABPP, who is fellowship trained and specializes in the treatment of painful and chronic conditions. Dr. Becknell is also available for general psychology appointments.

Many years ago I fell on ice and broke my tail bone. As time passed by, I experienced severe and chronic pain in that area. Eventually, in the ’80s I underwent surgery for the removal of the coccyx bone, yet the pain continued. This was most frustrating because I found it quite difficult to sit for any length of time! In 2006 I heard about Dr. Buenaventura, so I made an appointment to consult with him regarding this ongoing pain. I went through a series of Caudal Epidural Steroid Injections in my lower spine and tail bone areas. Thanks to Dr. B my life has been restored to normal activity and I am now pain free!
-Mrs. S

I have suffered from severe back pain since 1990. Throughout the years I have seen many doctors and have been prescribed a great deal of narcotics for my extreme pain issues, although the pain medications really didn’t help me. Unfortunately, the suffering continued. In the summer of 2007 my family doctor referred me to Dr. Buenaventura. First, Dr. B did a series of injections in my lower back, and then he told me I would be a good candidate for a new procedure option called Transdiscal Biaculoplasty. I agreed to have the procedure, so on September 28, 2007 in Dr. Buenaventura’s office, a miracle happened… after years of suffering & misery I experienced instant relief from pain! I am virtually pain-free now, and completely off all the pain medications I have taken for so many years. Dr. B, I thank you for your kindness & professionalism shown me and the wonderful gift of tremendous pain relief!
-Mr. E

I am retired from the military, and suffer from bulging discs in my neck to mid-back. Due to this condition, I have endured excruciating pain for many years. A doctor at WPAFB told me about Dr. Buenaventura and referred me to his office. Over a 6 month period, Dr. B has performed Trigger Point Injections, Facet Injections and Radiofrequency treatments all of which helped me gain relief. Although this is an ongoing condition needing continued treatments, my pain level is much lower and I am able to lead a normal life with the help of Dr. B. What a huge difference he has made in my life!
-Mr. B
