Our First Lady has made it a goal of hers while in office to make major headway in children’s obesity. The Food and Drug Administration will start to make sure food companies create customer friendly labels along with beverage companies adding calorie information on the front of their products. The American Academy of Pediatrics asked doctors to begin watching over their younger patient’s body mass index.
The Washington Post reports that $10 billion will be spent over the next 10 years giving schools more money for healthier food, this is being encouraged by the Obama Administration.

A new poll revealed that 60% of voters would support a $1 increase per pack of cigarettes, and that voters would prefer a tax hike over budget cuts. Reuters states that a tax increase on cigarettes could raise billions of dollars for struggling states. John Seffrin, chief executive of the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, said, “An increase in tobacco tax rates is not only sound public health policy but a smart and predictable way to help boost the economy and generate long-term health savings for states facing deepening budget deficits.”

Plastic Surgeons and dermatologists are letting out a huge sigh of relief since the tax on elective cosmetic surgery, also known as the “bo-tax,” has been dismissed. The new tax that is proposed in the health care bill will be on indoor tanning services.
NYTimes.com reported that the 10% tax on “fake” tanning services will go into effect in July 2010 which means any indoor tanning services provider must add that additional tax onto their services. By 2020 this new tax will have raised close to $3 billion, this money will go to help millions of Americans obtain health insurance.

There is a proposal in the Senate to slap “a 5% excise tax on elective cosmetic procedures… that includes things like Botox injections, breast implants, tummy tucks, face lifts, liposuction, teeth whitening, eyelid repairs, etc.” reports Jack Cafferty from CNN. The tax would exclude restorative surgeries.
