Post image for Cornyn Says Congress Must Start Over on Health Care Reform

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn says, “When the people of Massachusetts voted to send Scott Brown to Washington, they gave us an opportunity to produce the kind of health care reform that all Americans can support.” He says Americans want Republicans and Democrats to work on reform not behind closed doors, and to be clear about their plans.

Post image for Pelosi Says Health Care Reform Will Move Forward

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters on Thursday that Congress has the ability to move forward on health care reform “on many fronts”. This would include “working to pass smaller parts of the legislation in separate bills while still negotiating a comprehensive reform package,” states Lea Winerman from PBS. One of the things Pelosi stated that they could do is remove the antitrust exemption for insurers. Winerman reports that, “She did not give a specific timetable for any of the legislation. But an aide told the Boston Globe that a series of such smaller bills could be unveiled before the mid-February recess.”

Post image for Democrats Deciding Next Step for Health Care Reform

Republican Scott Brown’s victory in Massachusetts last week has left Democrats shocked and unsure of what to do next in regards to health care. According to Kent Garber from U.S. News, Democrats are “trying to decide what to do: push forward, back down, or take a new approach to salvage healthcare reform.” Wednesday night in President Obama’s State of the Union address, he urged congress to “finish the job for the American people,” but he didn’t specify a time limit. Whatever they choose to do depends on a few things, such as “including balancing what the White House wants against what Democratic leaders think they can get, interpreting what voters in Massachusetts were saying, and divining what, if anything, the outcome means for the November midterm elections,” states Garber.

Post image for Obama Still Determined to Reform Nation’s Health Care System

Wednesday night President Obama announced that he’s still determined to reform the nation’s health care system, despite the several setbacks he has faced. When addressing the health care reform issue in his State of the Union address, Obama “urged lawmakers to continue working towards expanding coverage to the uninsured and overhauling the way the U.S. health insurance companies do business,” reports Chris Rizo from Legal Newsline.

Post image for Health Care Reform will be Demanded If We Notice Faces Not Numbers

A record number of Americans have donated their time and money to support relief efforts in Haiti, revealing the intense compassion and generosity Americans have. If you turn on your television, it’s impossible to avoid seeing the devastating images of those suffering in Haiti, and the terrible conditions survivors are living in. And since these images are everywhere we turn, it has caused us to donate as much as we can, either online or through cell phones. And for a brief moment last week, these devastating images were interrupted to report Republican Scott Brown’s, a health care reform critic, victory in Massachusetts.

Post image for Democrats Concerned That Republicans Will Claim Victory for Health-Care Reform

Democrats are worried that a scaled-back version of the health-care bill will lead to Republicans taking all the credit. Thursday, House Democrats discussed a couple ways to get the health-care reform legislation passed. Sam Stein from the Huffington Post states that, “The first is to pass the Senate’s bill — though only on the condition that additional reforms would be tackled in a separate filibuster-proof bill, to be passed through a process called reconciliation. The second approach is to pare down the package — stripping it to its unobjectionable core (insurance regulation, money to help people buy care, etc.) — and use that as a building block for future legislation.”

Post image for What Obama Should Do Next to Save Health Care Reform

Many political commentators have already proclaimed that health care reform is no more due to Republican Scott Brown’s win in Massachusetts. However, it may be too soon to officially state the bill as being completely done. Douglas E. Schoen of NY Daily News states that, “What Massachusetts voters told us is that they have no appetite for partisan reform. In other words, lawmakers can still pass substantive legislation that improves America’s health care system so long as their effort is bipartisan.”

Post image for Senate Version of Health-Care Reform Doesn’t Look Like it will Survive in House

Republican Scott Brown’s win in Massachusetts on Tuesday has left President Barack Obama and Democratic leaders in shock, and has them scrambling for a new plan. The loss of their Senate supermajority has completely caught them off guard due to the fact that they were nearly done with reforming the nation’s health care system and already starting to shift focus onto other issues, such as creating more jobs and lowering the deficit.

Post image for Why Health-Care Reform Wasn’t as Popular as Expected

President Barack Obama’s health plan was created to help the average American by substantially lowering costs for families and not requiring adults to purchase insurance, and in return, only wealthy people’s taxes would increase. “But a year later, the health care proposals in Congress lack many of those easy-to-sell benefits, which became victims of the lengthy process of trying to win over wavering lawmakers, appeasing powerful special-interest groups and addressing concerns about the heavily burdened Treasury,” reports MSNBC.

Post image for Health-Care Reform Still Truckin’

Neil Cavuto from Fox News feels that health care reform is still alive even though Senator Scott Brown (R) is heading to Washington. Cavuto says Democrats still have “plenty of weapons, because, for now, they still have plenty of seats in the House, and yes, in the Senate too. Enough to force just a simple majority vote in the Senate for health care, even if it gives Republicans fits.”

Post image for Republican Victory has Democratic Leaders Struggling with Health Care Reform

Due to Senator Scott Brown (R) defeating state Attorney General Martha Coakley (D) for the Senate seat, Democratic leaders are racing to salvage health-care reform legislation. On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) got together to talk about plans for if there was a Republican victory, which in fact there was. “The House Democratic Caucus then met shortly after 7 pm Tuesday to discuss the progress of healthcare negotiations with the Senate and White House,” reports Alexander Bolton from The Hill.
