When we go to the doctor’s office we expect to see a nurse practitioner first to check our blood pressure and temperature and to ask us a few basic questions, but we then expect the doctor to come in soon after to give us an official diagnosis and to prescribe us the proper medication. However, because of the threatening shortage of primary care doctors, 28 states are thinking about giving nurse practitioners more power as a solution.These expanded powers would include prescribing narcotics and also practicing without have a doctor looking over their shoulder.

According to CNN, millions of Americans suffer from allergies, and unfortunately trees and plants are shedding pollen early this year making it hard for allergy sufferers to breathe, and also causing them to suffer from many other annoying and unpleasant symptoms. If you are a Knoxville, Tennessee resident, you, unfortunately, have it the worst according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Knoxville tops the charts as having one of the highest pollen scores, a high amount of allergy medicine being used per patient, and a low number of board-certified allergists per patient.

Diana Rosetti from CantonRep.com reports that “watching politicians on television outline ways to save taxpayer dollars through health care reform spurred Dr. Cynthia J. Koelker into action.” Koelker is not your ordinary doctor; she makes house calls and keeps her practice small in order to establish close relationships with her patients. She stresses that patients should constantly ask their doctors questions, and be proactive in their healthcare. Koelker says, “I thought I could write a list of 100 things people could do today, so I sat down at my kitchen table and did it.” Koelker published a book entitled “101 Ways to Save Money on Healthcare” which reveals information medical professionals know and other’s do not.

As the US health care reform progresses, brand-name prescription drug prices climb, whereas the rest of consumer goods and services decrease. AARP executive vice president John Rother reports that, “drug makers are raising their prices and enjoying windfall profits, even as the rest of the economy is suffering.”
