Post image for Antidepressant Taken During Pregnancy May Cause Heart Defect in Newborn

A new study suggests that taking the antidepressant bupropion during the early stages of pregnancy may increase the risk of having a baby with a particular type of heart defect, reports Reuters. Researchers say the risk of the heart defect is small, and they aren’t even sure if the medication is the cause. They estimate that it only affects 2 out of every 1,000 babies born to women who use bupropion during the first trimester. However, the findings “do add to questions about the risks of using antidepressants during early pregnancy,” states Reuters.

Post image for Exercising While Pregnant Can Lead to a Slimmer Baby

According to Reuters, new research from New Zealand shows that women who work out while they’re pregnant have slimmer babies. Mom’s who didn’t exercise while pregnant had babies whose weights were higher than average, and according to researchers, exercise could have helped “normalize” the weights of the babies of the exercising moms. Dr. Paul L. Hofman of the University of Auckland says, “The modest reduction in birth weight in this study may lead to long-term reduction in the risk for obesity in offspring of women who exercised in pregnancy.”

Post image for Baby Slings to Blame for Infant Deaths?

Two types of baby slings made by Infantino, a San Diego, California-based company, have been recalled due to several parents reporting that the baby slings were responsible for their infants’ death. Fourteen deaths have been connected to these sling-style carriers, and three of these deaths “appeared to occur in one of Infantino’s slings,” reports Eliott C. McLaughlin from CNN. Due to several deaths being linked to these baby slings, about 1 million of the slings were recalled in the U.S.

Post image for Another Case for Nursing: Weight Loss

The jealousy-inducing-weight-loss that some mothers can pull off after birth has, for some time, been a topic of debate. Some attribute it to factors such as genes, and spending an exorbitant amount of time in the gym. However, a trending idea in weight loss is the idea that breast feeding can aid in weight loss. To some this may seem absurd, but recent studies suggest that breast feeding could in fact promote post birth weight loss.
