Ever find yourself planting your toddler in front of the boob tube with Baby Einstein on? You may think you are doing your child and yourself a favor. Of course all parents want the best for their children and while their kids are young most parents try just about everything to keep them growing healthy.

When Baby Einstein came out a lot of mothers were thrilled to have an educational tool for their infant which would in turn give them a moment to breathe, clean and catch up on any work. Sorry moms, we have some bad news…

Post image for Baby Einstein Not Effective In Helping Language Skills

A new study revealed that children’s language skills don’t get better after watching educational DVDs like the Baby Wordsworth from the Walt Disney Company’s Baby Einstein series. Frederik Joelving from Reuters reports, “While The Baby Einstein Company does not explicitly make educational claims, it notes on its web page that the Baby Wordsworth DVD is a “playful introduction to words and sign language.””

The study was over a 6 week span and involved 88 children, ages one and two. Some children were assigned to watch the Baby Einstein DVD, and others were assigned not to. At the end of the study, researchers “then tested the language skills in each group based on how many words the kids knew according to their parents and how well they did in a lab test,” states Joelving. These tests revealed that children who watched the DVD had the same language skills as the children who didn’t watch the DVD.

Post image for Hormone Oxytocin Might Help People with Autism

A new study revealed that a hormone that strengthens the relationship between mother and baby may be beneficial for adults with autism. JoAnne Allen from Reuters reports, “[Researchers] found patients who inhaled the hormone oxytocin paid more attention to expressions when looking at pictures of faces and were more likely to understand social cues in a game simulation.” According to Allen, “Angela Sirigu of the Center of Cognitive Neuroscience in Lyon, who led the study, said the hormone has a therapeutic potential in adults as well as in children with autism.”

Post image for Babies Cry in French/German

A new study suggests that infants cries are directly influence by the language their parents speak.

WebMD reports, “It’s well known by experts that parental voices, especially a mother’s, are perceived in utero and memorized, as are other sounds, such as simple musical melodies, says Kathleen Wermke, PhD, a medical anthropologist at the University of Wurzburg in Wurzburg, Germany, and a researcher of the study.”
