With childhood obesity on the rise, schools are taking “early steps toward adding more fresh and homemade foods as advocated by British chef Jamie Oliver, who led a campaign to improve school lunch in his country,” reports Reuters. More fresh fruits and vegetables will be added to thousands of U.S. public school lunch menus, and to make this all happen, the schools will get together with local farmers to stay within their budgets.

The rate of childhood obesity has tripled within the past 30 years and remains high among all children, regardless of race, sex, and ethnic groups, but according to a new study, where children are raised may be a strong predictor of whether they’ll become obese or not, reports HealthDay.com. Almost half of all children are overweight or obese, but rates of childhood obesity are significantly higher in Southern states than in other regions.

Post image for Picky Eating Habits of Autistic Children a Nutritional Risk

Many kids are picky eaters. My 11-year-old sister likes her sandwiches with mustard, pickles and lettuce only… just bread, mustard, pickles and lettuce. This probably sounds extremely unappealing to a majority of people, but that’s how she likes it, and that’s the only way she will eat it. Her sandwich preference definitely falls under the category of picky eating, and new research shows that autistic children are even more likely to be picky when it comes to eating. Reuters states that autistic children “tend to refuse more foods and are more likely to restrict their diets to a smaller variety of foods than other children.”

Post image for How to Prevent Your Child From Getting Hurt While Playing Sports

While playing any sport you take the risk of injuring yourself; however, kids are much more susceptible to sports injuries for many reasons. Children are “less coordinated and have slower reaction times than adults because they are still growing and developing,” reports KidsHealth.org. Also, kids grow and mature at different rates, so even though kids on the same team are the same age, their sizes vary greatly, which can also increase the risk of injury. And kids tend to not think things through all the way, so they may take risks while playing sports without realizing that they could seriously injure themselves.

Even though kids seem to be more likely to get injured while playing sports, there are several things you can do to lessen the chance of injury.

Post image for Baby Einstein Not Effective In Helping Language Skills

A new study revealed that children’s language skills don’t get better after watching educational DVDs like the Baby Wordsworth from the Walt Disney Company’s Baby Einstein series. Frederik Joelving from Reuters reports, “While The Baby Einstein Company does not explicitly make educational claims, it notes on its web page that the Baby Wordsworth DVD is a “playful introduction to words and sign language.””

The study was over a 6 week span and involved 88 children, ages one and two. Some children were assigned to watch the Baby Einstein DVD, and others were assigned not to. At the end of the study, researchers “then tested the language skills in each group based on how many words the kids knew according to their parents and how well they did in a lab test,” states Joelving. These tests revealed that children who watched the DVD had the same language skills as the children who didn’t watch the DVD.
