Post image for Does Vitamin B Really Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease?

A couple of recent studies have shown “contradictory conclusions on the value of B vitamins and folic acid in reducing the risks of heart disease,” reports Reuters. Post image for Fruits and Vegetables Offer Little Cancer Prevention

It has been a well known belief that by eating fruits and vegetables your risk of cancer significantly decreases. However, a new study has shown that “the benefits of fruits and vegetables… [are] not as strong as previously believed,” reports Madison Park from CNN. The study found that eating an additional 200 grams of fruits and vegetables a day resulted in only a 3 percent reduction of cancer risk.

Post image for Like School Lunch, But Healthy

Being the ever astute students, we decided to apply the scientific method by creating a hypothesis and performing experiments. To our surprise, they did in fact bounce, just like rubber. While I still don’t know if they were actually rubber, it leaves me elated to hear the strides that the government is taking to improve the health of school food products and comes right on the heels of First Lady Obama expressing concerns over childhood obesity.

Post image for Stay Away From Raw Milk

According to the Food and Drug Administration, you should not drink raw milk. Raw milk hasn’t been pasteurized, “which means there could still be harmful bacteria like E. Coli that are still in it,” reports Nadia Crow from Fox28.com. Some people believe that raw milk is healthier than pasteurized store-bought milk; however, experts say it is just the opposite. In Michigan, 12 people got sick just this month from drinking raw milk that came from a dairy farm in Middlebury.

Post image for Healthy Food…at the Movie Theater?

When people think of going to the movies, they think of candy, soda, and buttery popcorn. It’s almost impossible to resist the temptation of ordering these tasty treats when everyone around you is enjoying them, but what if people around you were eating fruit and yogurt instead of popcorn and candy; would you be more willing to pass on the unhealthy snacks? With childhood obesity on the rise, “one studio head has a hankering to see yogurt and veggies at the concession stand,” reports Reuters.

Post image for Stay in Shape by Drinking Red Wine

A new study revealed that drinking red wine might help keep a woman’s weight in check. The study involved 20,000 “trim” women, and “over time, women who drank alcohol in moderation put on less weight and were less apt to become overweight compared to non-drinkers,” reports Megan Brooks from Reuters. Other alcohols such as white wine, beer and spirits also helped at keeping the women in shape; however, red wine proved to be the most beneficial.

Post image for Low-Fat or Low Carb, Which is Best for You?

Low-fat or low-carb, which one do you prefer? Which one works best for you? Do you even know? Well you’re in luck if you don’t; a new study revealed that a genetic test can help people choose which diet is more effective in helping them lose weight. The study followed 133 overweight women for a year. All the women “with a genetic predisposition to benefit from a low-carbohydrate diet lost 2 1/2 times as much weight as those on the same diet without the predisposition,” reports Ron Winslow from The Wall Street Journal. Also, women with a “genetic makeup that favored a low-fat diet lost substantially more weight than women who curbed fat calories without low-fat genes,” says Winslow.
