The jealousy-inducing-weight-loss that some mothers can pull off after birth has, for some time, been a topic of debate. Some attribute it to factors such as genes, and spending an exorbitant amount of time in the gym. However, a trending idea in weight loss is the idea that breast feeding can aid in weight loss. To some this may seem absurd, but recent studies suggest that breast feeding could in fact promote post birth weight loss.

A new study revealed that children’s language skills don’t get better after watching educational DVDs like the Baby Wordsworth from the Walt Disney Company’s Baby Einstein series. Frederik Joelving from Reuters reports, “While The Baby Einstein Company does not explicitly make educational claims, it notes on its web page that the Baby Wordsworth DVD is a “playful introduction to words and sign language.””
The study was over a 6 week span and involved 88 children, ages one and two. Some children were assigned to watch the Baby Einstein DVD, and others were assigned not to. At the end of the study, researchers “then tested the language skills in each group based on how many words the kids knew according to their parents and how well they did in a lab test,” states Joelving. These tests revealed that children who watched the DVD had the same language skills as the children who didn’t watch the DVD.

A child seizure study that focused on three anti-epilepsy drugs discovered that the oldest drug “was best for treating childhood absence epilepsy, in which youngsters often stare into space for up to 20 seconds many times a day,” reports Gene Emery from Reuters. The oldest drug, ethosuximide, has been available since the 1950s, and was the most effective; the worst was lamotrigine.

Childhood obesity is on the rise with about 17 percent of American children being considered overweight. According to a new study, “kids snack three times a day and chips, candy and other junk foods now account for more than 27 percent of children’s daily caloric intake,” reports CBS News. The snacks children consume on a daily basis add about 168 calories to their daily diets. “To put 168 extra calories per day in perspective: at 3,500 calories per pound, that translates to 17.5 extra pounds a year,” states CBS News medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook.

A new study of 23 children, all whom were allergic to peanuts, revealed that taking small doses of peanut powder can increase people’s tolerance to peanuts. A higher tolerance means people wouldn’t be so vulnerable to such small amounts of peanuts. Dr. Wesley Burks says, “When you take the daily dose it changes your immune system in a certain way and it raises the threshold of how much food it takes to cause a reaction.”
