The jealousy-inducing-weight-loss that some mothers can pull off after birth has, for some time, been a topic of debate. Some attribute it to factors such as genes, and spending an exorbitant amount of time in the gym. However, a trending idea in weight loss is the idea that breast feeding can aid in weight loss. To some this may seem absurd, but recent studies suggest that breast feeding could in fact promote post birth weight loss.

A new study revealed that children’s language skills don’t get better after watching educational DVDs like the Baby Wordsworth from the Walt Disney Company’s Baby Einstein series. Frederik Joelving from Reuters reports, “While The Baby Einstein Company does not explicitly make educational claims, it notes on its web page that the Baby Wordsworth DVD is a “playful introduction to words and sign language.””
The study was over a 6 week span and involved 88 children, ages one and two. Some children were assigned to watch the Baby Einstein DVD, and others were assigned not to. At the end of the study, researchers “then tested the language skills in each group based on how many words the kids knew according to their parents and how well they did in a lab test,” states Joelving. These tests revealed that children who watched the DVD had the same language skills as the children who didn’t watch the DVD.

According to researchers, blood-sugar levels that were once considered normal for pregnant women are not safe for the baby or the mother. These blood-sugar levels that were once seen as normal can cause premature labor and other complications. “Previously doctors had thought that between five and eight per cent of women suffered from [gestational diabetes] during their pregnancy. But a new international study involving 23,000 women in nine countries suggests that more than twice as many mothers to be, 16 per cent, developed the disease,” reports Kate Devlin from Telegraph.co.uk.

What mom doesn’t get that pang in their heart when standing outside their babies room while they wail? Teaching babies to sleep on their own is definitely tough but absolutely necessary.
According to MomLogic.Com, keeping a routine with bedtime is very important. Put together a peaceful atmosphere that encourages sleep. Laying your child down yourself while they are sleepy but awake is best. That moment between when your baby is sleepy and when they fall asleep can be really hard.

Many questions have risen about gluten and how it affects our bodies. It has been discovered that if anyone develops celiac disease, a digestive disorder which is easily misdiagnosed (or overlooked) due to its varied symptoms, they could become infertile. Additionally, when someone with this disease consumes gluten, they end up damaging their small intestine.

According to a California analysis, 40-year-old mothers-to-be have a 50% higher chance than younger moms to bear a child affected by autism. Which continues to say that it is not likely that this delay in motherhood plays a big role in the current autism epidemic. Mothers over 40 years old in California increased by 300% while autism grew by 600% which at first look seems that the rise in autism parallels older mothers. Older moms don’t add up as the reason for this increase in autistic children, which is now one out of 100 kids.

Much applause goes out to a campaign encouraging parents to put babies to sleep on their backs – it has cut the number of babies who die suddenly in half over the past 20 years. Unfortunately, sudden infant death syndrome is still the leading cause of death in babies between 30 days and a year old. In 2000 the number of deaths hit a plateau, despite a higher amount of awareness of the risk factors for the astonishing disorder.

This day in age women don’t seem to be having children as young as their moms were. In 1970 the average age for women to give birth to their first child was 21, in 2006 this age jumped up to 25. Japan and Switzerland are the oldest aged mothers who give birth to their first child at age 29. Women age 35 and older who give birth to their first child increased their age eight times since the 70s.
The National Center for Health Statistics concludes that the median age for first time mothers is crucial for influence on the growth of our future population. The mother’s age is important to document because it will help measure the birth weight and a possible birth defect outcome.

According to the Food and Drug Administration Mommy’s Bliss Nipple Cream should not be used by new moms. FDA warns customers that this cream encompasses ingredients that may harm nursing babies.
FDA alerted WebMD.com that mothers and caregivers need to seek immediate medical attention if these strange symptoms: loss of appetite, trouble in waking the baby, limp arms or legs, weak grip strength or discoloration of skin occur.
Two ingredients that seem to be causing a lot of problems with respitory issues are: chlorphensein and phenoxyethanol. Chlorphenesin relaxes skeletal muscle and can slow the central nervous system and cause respiratory depression in infants. Phenoxyethanol is a preservative that’s mainly used in make up and medications- it can lower the central nervous system, cause vomiting, diarrhea and lead to dehydration.
