Last week, high blood pressure was declared as a “neglected disease” that costs the U.S. health system $73 billion a year, states Julie Steenhuysen from Reuters. A major cause of high blood pressure is consuming too much salt, so the U.S. government is “looking for solutions to curb salt intake as a way to head off future heart attacks and strokes that help drain healthcare systems,” reports Steenhuysen.

A new study showed that if healthcare reform doesn’t pass, rural residents will suffer substantially. Lynda Waddington from The Iowa Independent states, “Jon Bailey, director of the rural research and analysis program at the Center and author of the study, believes that existing health care policy, or lack of it, places rural people at a disadvantage that will worsen if steps are not taken by Congress.” Bailey went on to say that “the benefits far outweigh the risks of inaction.”

According to CNN, “Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Congress would pass a health care bill this year, while his counterpart in the House — Speaker Nancy Pelosi — outlined a two-step plan intended to maintain public focus on the issue.” However, because of Republican Scott Brown’s victory in Massachusetts last week, hopes of getting a bill passed were quickly crushed. Democrats lost their 60-vote Senate supermajority, and since the election, Democrats have been struggling to think of a new plan.

Wednesday night President Obama announced that he’s still determined to reform the nation’s health care system, despite the several setbacks he has faced. When addressing the health care reform issue in his State of the Union address, Obama “urged lawmakers to continue working towards expanding coverage to the uninsured and overhauling the way the U.S. health insurance companies do business,” reports Chris Rizo from Legal Newsline.

A record number of Americans have donated their time and money to support relief efforts in Haiti, revealing the intense compassion and generosity Americans have. If you turn on your television, it’s impossible to avoid seeing the devastating images of those suffering in Haiti, and the terrible conditions survivors are living in. And since these images are everywhere we turn, it has caused us to donate as much as we can, either online or through cell phones. And for a brief moment last week, these devastating images were interrupted to report Republican Scott Brown’s, a health care reform critic, victory in Massachusetts.

Many political commentators have already proclaimed that health care reform is no more due to Republican Scott Brown’s win in Massachusetts. However, it may be too soon to officially state the bill as being completely done. Douglas E. Schoen of NY Daily News states that, “What Massachusetts voters told us is that they have no appetite for partisan reform. In other words, lawmakers can still pass substantive legislation that improves America’s health care system so long as their effort is bipartisan.”
