Post image for Are You Addicted to the Internet?

Recently, there have been reports showing that people can become addicted to tanning beds and junk food, and now a new study has revealed that many college students are addicted to the internet, “showing symptoms similar to drug and alcohol addictions,” reports Reuters. As a college student I can definitely relate; I would like to think that I am not addicted, but I do know that if I leave my iPhone at home, or have no internet connection I feel disconnected from the world and feel like something’s missing. It’s almost like a sense of security and comfort to be able to look down at my phone at any moment and have the internet right there at my fingertips.

According to new research, people who regularly use tanning beds meet the typical addiction criteria. Also, according to HealthDay.com, a proportion of people who repeatedly bask under sun lamps who meet the standard criteria for addiction reported higher levels of anxiety and substance use. There may be hope though for hard-core tanning bed users; experts say if people truly are addicted to using tanning beds, then addiction treatments might actually help prevent skin cancer.

We all know cigarettes aren’t good for you, yet, people continue to smoke. Because menthol cigarettes have a minty taste, health advocates say these cigarettes could possibly be more addicting than regular cigarettes. “A committee of outside experts that advises the Food and Drug Administration began hearing data on menthol’s impact on smokers’ use and health,” and is due to issue a report by March 2011, reports Lisa Richwine from Reuters.

Post image for Are You Addicted to Junk Food?

According to JoAnne Allen from Reuters, a new study revealed that over indulging on junk food might be just as addictive as cocaine or nicotine, which then could lead to compulsive eating and obesity. The study used animals, which means the findings cannot be “directly applied to human obesity, but researchers say the findings “may help in understanding the condition and in developing therapies to treat it,” reports Allen.

Post image for Number of Pre-Teens Abusing Inhalants Raises Concerns

Inhalants such as aerosol computer cleaners, glue, hair sprays, paint solvents and gasoline are used by many pre-teens to get high. It is more common for 12-year-olds to get high from inhalants rather than other drugs such as marijuana, cocaine and hallucinogens. According to HealthDay.com, more 12-year-olds have used inhalants to get high than all these other drugs combined. These inhalants can be deadly, yet almost seven percent of 12-year-olds say they have sniffed inhalants to get high. “Huffing” or sniffing these drugs can cause sudden death from cardiac arrest, and people who use these products to get high take the risk of getting addicted.
