When my dentist first told me I was missing my lateral incisor, thrilled was definitely not the emotion I was feeling. After he determined that I was only missing one of my lateral incisors, the next step was discussing what our plan of action was going to be. I had the option of just pulling my teeth together, or separating them to make room for a dental implant to replace my missing lateral incisor. For symmetry reasons, option B sounded like the better choice. So after several years of braces, my teeth were separated and I was left with a space to place the implant.

First a bone graft was done to insure that the implant would be secure, then months later the implant was placed, and then finally the final crown was put on. The entire procedure took about a year and a half, but now that everything is complete, I can definitely say I’m glad I chose to get the implant.

Pros of Dental Implants include:

  1. Dental implants are permanent and will last your lifetime
  2. They are natural looking and are very functional
  3. Not only do they look better, but they feel better than removable bridges

Cons of Dental Implants include:

  1. Dental Implants can be quite pricey (But don’t forget to check PriceDoc.com to see how much dental implants cost near you!)
  2. The entire procedure can be time consuming
  3. There are some risks and side-effects including: discomfort, pain, bruising, and/or minor swelling
  4. The crown (false tooth placed on top) will need to be replaced in ten to fifteen years

Overall, I feel like the pros significantly outweighed the cons of getting a dental implant. If you’re thinking about getting dental implants, find an oral surgeon near you to start the process!
