A physical exam for sports, also known as a preparticipation physical examination (PPE), helps determine whether it’s safe for you to participate in a particular sport. Most states require kids to get physicals before joining any sport or before each season begins. However, even if your school doesn’t require you to get a physical before the school year begins, doctors still highly recommend getting one (even if it might not sound like the most appealing thing in the world).

What Does a Physical Exam Involve?

You will be asked questions about your medical history, including questions about serious illnesses among other family members, illnesses you had when you were younger, previous surgeries and/or hospitalizations, allergies, past injuries, and any medications that you are on. It’s important to be completely honest and open with your doctor and to answer the questions as well as you can so he or she can insure that it’s safe for you to participate in the sport you desire to play. Most of the exam will be the same for males and females, but some questions may vary.

Your height and weight will be recorded. The doctor will take your blood pressure and read your pulse, your vision will be tested, and he or she will also check your heart, lungs, abdomen, ears, nose, and throat. Your posture, joints, strength and flexibility will also need to be evaluated.
