The following post is a contribution from a PriceDoc Provider defining Invisalign in simplified terms. Many thanks to Dr. Becky Coats, for taking the time to answer these questions. We hope this post provides enough information to answer your questions, but if you do have any, ask them in the comments below!

  • Definition, in simple terms, of Invisalign and any other commonly used names:
    • Invisialign is an orthodontic treatment approved by the FDA involving a series of virtually invisible custom trays that will progressively move your teeth. You can simply remove the trays to eat, floss and brush, or for special occasions, and they are more comfortable than metal braces.
  • What specific type of Provider (Specialist) offers Invisalign?
    • General dentists perform the procedure for Invisalign braces. However, most orthodontist do this procedure as well. Don’t forget to check PriceDoc to find out how much Invisalign costs near you!
  • Are there new techniques available today for Invisalign?
    • The new techniques would all involve braces; however, there are a multiple options including clear ceramic brackets as used in 6 month smiles, or self-ligating brackets which place less friction on the teeth and provide faster treatment times.
  • What are the potential risks/side-effects of getting Invisalign (if any)?
    • While Invisalign moves your teeth without the pain and anxiety of metal braces, some people will experience temporary discomfort for a few days at the beginning of each new stage of treatment. This is normal and is typically described as a feeling of pressure. It’s also a sign that Invisalign is working, as it moves your teeth to their final destination. This discomfort typically goes away in a couple of days.
  • Do I need any tests and/or exams before getting Invisalign (if any)?
    • A consultation with a dentist is the first test to determine if the patient is a good candidate. The consultation will include pictures and x-rays to determine if the teeth and gums are healthy to move forward with treatment.
  • How long does it take to complete the Invisalign procedure?
    • The length of treatment depends on the severity of your case and can only be determined by your doctor; however, the average case takes about 12 months.
  • What is the recovery timeline from getting Invisalign (if any)?
    • There is no recovery timeline. During the last session, the patient will be done with their treatment if they are satisfied with the appearance of their teeth.
  • What do we know about outcomes for Invisalign?
    • Patients are always excited with the outcome of their treatment, as it gives them a straight healthy smile they can be proud of.
