What is your favorite way to quench your thirst during summer? If it isn’t clear then you probably aren’t choosing the right kind of liquid. Summer is a time when you sweat a lot and change the levels of water within your body.

According to NYTimes.com, the heat of summer might tempt you to grab any ice cold beverage you find, but steer clear of any sugary drink to keep from adding to your fat stores and putting your blood sugar out of whack.

Regardless of whether it is summer or winter, you probably don’t drink as much water as your body needs. Calculate the proper amount of water for your body by multiplying your weight in pounds by 0.08. Keep in mind that not all of this has to come from drinking water, but also by incorporating fruits, veggies and other foods into your diet that have moisture in them.

Dehydration can be very scary. Symptoms can be anything from feeling drowsy and irritated to experiencing headaches or muscle cramps. Dry air, high heat and high altitude can all be contributing factors in how much you should drink.

Flavored bottled waters — like Snapple’s Tropical Mango Antioxidant Water — may carry an aura of healthfulness. But the 150 calories of sugar, when consumed in place of plain water, can increase your weight by 15 pounds in a year, Mr. Zinczenko, co-author of an enlightening new book, “Drink This, Not That!” (Rodale, Inc., 2010), points out.
