Do you eat a lot of meat? In the last decade several health studies have found links to red meat and cancer. The public has been warned about consuming less red meat than other proteins, but recently a specific link from red meat to bowel cancer has been found.
According to BBC News.Com the British Meat Industry and the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) may have found a link between red meat and bowel cancer. WCRF reports that red and processed meats may heighten the risk of colorectal cancer. In 2007 a publication was issued to warn consumers about their intake on red meat. Conclusions point to organizations that sponsor meat producers may be flawed. According to the recommendations of WCRF red meat should be eaten quite modestly and salami and ham should never be consumed. A study done by the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition-Oxford (EPIC) reported that people who ate 6-12 ounces per day of red meat were 35% more likely to be at risk for bowel cancer than those who almost never consumed red meat.
Nell Barrie, Cancer Research UK’s science information officer, said: “Two of the world’s largest studies on diet and cancer have found that people are more likely to develop some cancers, such as bowel cancer, if they eat too much red or processed meat.
