Do you always remember to put sunscreen on before you step out the door? As summer continues, the heat is becoming hard to handle… especially the sun. Our skin is so sensitive to the sun’s rays that even 30 minutes without sunscreen can cause our skin to burn.
According to Health.com, our skin burns as a defense mechanism, to fight against the harmful UV rays that the sun gives off. And apparently the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has issued a report on the safety of different sunscreens.
EWG has stamped it’s approval on 39 out of 200 sunscreens this year. Their claim to sunscreen being unsafe is that certain ingredients might end up disrupting normal hormone function, or it may increase the risk of melanoma. Dermatologists continue to encourage people to use sunscreen, but to use other precautions as well such as, wearing hats, clothing, picking shady spots and to venture outside when the sun is not at it’s peak (12-3 p.m.)
“It’s sort of diminishing returns as you get to the higher SPF numbers,” says Dr. Weinstock, who chairs the American Cancer Society’s skin cancer advisory committee. “For some people with particular problems very high SPF numbers may be important, but for most people SPF 30 is pretty good.”
Compare prices for a skin biopsy near your home, to clarify a suspicious mole or patch of skin.
