Do you smoke? One word: STOP! Hopefully, you should know that by now. There are other ways to prevent your body from being diagnosed with this dreadful disease.
According to EverydayHealth.com, there are seven different cancer risks that you should steer clear of:
- Tobacco…DUH! Smoking tobacco will damage practically every organ in your body and 15 different types of cancers are possible. This includes smoking not only cigarettes but pipes, cigars, chewing tobacco and snuff. Secondhand smoke can also cause cancer, asthma, pneumonia and SIDS.
- Obesity: being overweight can cause more than a dozen different types of cancer including pancreatic and breast cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends keeping your body as healthy as you can. Steer away from processed foods, red meat and incorporate more fruit, veggies and whole grains into your diet.
- Not exercising: to keep your body healthy you not only need to have a healthy diet but you need to increase your physical activity. An hour of exercise per day will keep you in prime shape.
- Exposure to sun: more than a million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year in America…most from the sun. Melanoma can be fatal if diagnosed with. Lower your risk for skin cancer by limiting your exposure between 10-4 pm, staying in the shade, appying sunscreen, UV protective sunglasses and NO tanning beds.
- Infections: if you ever develop an infection from bacteria, a virus or a parasite cancers can form. HPV can form as well as HIV. Minimize your risk by practicing protective sex, women receive HPV vaccine and going to your physician as soon as you are suspicious.
- Exposure to chemicals: two specific products that are used in common products are known to cause cancer. Asbestos: was used to insulate older buildings can cause cancer by inhalation. Tetrachloroethylene is a solvent used in dry cleaning.
- Consumer Products: beware of talcum powder, hair dye, antiperspirants, aspartame and cosmetics which all have been known to possibly cause cancer. The USDA continues to keep a close watch on these various products by doing continual studies.
