Are you having uncontrollable acid reflux or heartburn? You may be suffering from GERD (gastroesphageal reflux disease). But unfortunately, GERD can oftentimes be hard to detect with fewer symptoms.
According to Everydayhealth.com, GERD is a digestive disorder that occurs when tummy acids, bile and other contents of the stomach begin to back up into the esophagus. This happens when the esophageal sphincter muscle becomes to weak to keep stomach contents in the tummy.
There are less-common GERD symptoms that might not be noticeable because they mimic other conditions.
GERD symptoms that don’t occur as often, which might be misdiagnosed are:
- Hoarse voice
- Repetitive laryngitis
- Frequent sore throat
- Chronic cough after nightly meals
- Asthma
- Is something stuck in the back of your throat?
- Chronic sinus infections
- Middle of the back pain
- Tooth decay
- Chest pain
- Difficulty swallowing
You may be asking yourself, how does acid reflux spawn so many other symptoms? When acids and bile back up into the esophagus and mouth and entering a territory that is not prepared to handle those harsh fluids.
“The typical symptoms of GERD are heartburn as well as acid regurgitation,” says John Clarke, MD, assistant professor of medicine in the division of gastroenterology and director of esophageal motility at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
