Ladies: do you take birth control? Do you take Yaz or Yasmine? You must be aware of the Yaz commercials that have been airing. Lately, Yaz and Yasmin have been on every TV channel and almost every newspaper discussing how their form of birth control has women at a huge risk for heart attacks, pulmonary embolisms, sudden death, gallbladder disease, strokes and/or blood clots. This Bayer product has health advocates saying their birth control puts women at a more dangerous chance of developing these health problems than other birth control companies.
All this speculation has given Yaz, Yasmin and Bayer a huge kick in the pants, since being the best-selling birth control in the United States. The health advocates speaking out against Bayer are going head to head with a large European health study that Bayer organized. Bayer, is the “Golliath” of pharmaceutical companies, which originated from Germany. Bayer seems to report a completely opposite conclusion than these health advocates… The study powered by Bayer figured out that the cardiovascular risks in women who take Bayer products were similar to those taking an older formula of birth control pills.
According to NYTimes.Com, seventy-four lawsuits have been placed against Bayer as regulators are finding major negatives with the Yaz franchise. The FDA asked Bayer in 2009 to correct their misleading TV commercials. Then, later in the year, the Food and Drug Administration cited Bayer for not following the correct control procedures at a plant that makes hormone ingredients. The American side of Bayer has confidently stuck by their safety after their products have been continuously monitored and studied. Unfortunately, even if Bayer’s products do end up being relatively safe, they have been so deeply scrutinized and what started as a mole hill has turned into Mt. Everest.
“The health questions and the lawsuits may rattle consumer confidence, but the warnings from federal health authorities about advertising and quality control raise larger questions about Bayer’s approach to complying with government rules,” said Michael A. Santoro, an associate professor at the Rutgers Business School who has studied ethics in the pharmaceutical industry.
