Ladies – have you ever had a yeast infection? Then you know how miserable it feels. You might find it surprising how many different, easy ways you can develop a yeast infection.
According to EverydayHealth.com, some daily habits can lead to yeast infections, so:
- Stay away from the sweet stuff. Refined carbs – aka: white sugar, white flour, white rice, cookies, cakes, candy and alcohol. They can lead to vaginal discomfort and odor.
- Stick to cotton. Tight-fitting jeans, thongs and underwear not made from cotton won’t allow air to breathe around your vagina.
- Get your zzzzs. Not getting enough sleep can lead to a weak immune system – which leaves you susceptible to acquiring an infection.
- Bye bye stress. Stress can attack your immune system, that is one of the leading causes of a yeast infection. Try stress-reducing techniques like yoga, meditation or exercise.
- No feminine spray. Feminine wipes and sprays will keep your natural, healthy bacteria away. If you feel the need to freshen up, take a quick shower or use a wash cloth with mild soap.
- What meds are you taking? Prescription medication, oral contraceptives, antibiotics and steroids can lead to a yeast infection. Birth control increases the estrogen levels in your body which make it easier to develop an infection. Antibiotics have the ability to kill all bacteria which gives space for yeast to grow.
“Yeast thrives on moist, dark environments,” says Robert Goldfarb, MD, an obstetrician/gynecologist at Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital in West Bloomfield, Mich. “And the increased moisture caused by these clothes creates the perfect environment for yeast to grow.”
