What chemicals are you around everyday? Are you aware of their toxic levels?

According to CNN.com, research is connecting five of the most common chemicals to developing cancer, behavior issues and sexual problems. Most people are around these products everyday, they are in the carpet, food wrap, mattresses, shower curtains, cookware, bedding… the list goes on and on. Every room in every house in America most likely contains at least one of these chemicals. The scary part is… several of these chemicals did not exist a century ago.

These five chemicals are:

  1. BPA (Bisphenol A) is used as a building block, clear, lightweight plastic. This is used in water bottles, baby bottles, reusable food containers and plastic tableware. Heightened exposure to BPA is linked to reducing male sexual function and a potential cancer risk to women. To reduce exposure, buy stainless steel bottles and glass food storage containers.
  2. Phthalates is a combination of chemicals that softens plastics and bind other chemicals together. Phthalates are found in shampoos, conditioners, perfume, cologne, nail polish, soap, IV bags and more. Most people are exposed by phthalates getting absorbed into the body through personal hygiene products, in drugs, food, water and dust. Infants are exposed through baby shampoos, lotions and powders. Health effects are cause of ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and they could affect the male reproductive development. Reduce exposure by avoiding hair care products that list “fragrance” as an ingredient.
  3. PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic acid) (C8) this is used to make Teflon and thousands of other nonstick, stain and water repellent products. PFOA is used on cookware, furniture and carpet. We are exposed by inhaling contaminated air, eating contaminated food and drinking contaminated water. Almost everyone has PFOA in their blood, which could cause cancer. To reduce exposure, do not overheat your nonstick cookware.
  4. Formaldehyde is used in resins to act as a glue in making wood products. This is found in particle board, plywood, paneling, glue and adhesives. We are exposed by breathing in car exhaust and cigarette smoke. Possible health effects are known for causing cancers in the respiratory or gastrointestinal tract. Reduce exposure by purchasing furniture free from formaldehyde, purchase “exterior grade” pressed-wood products.
  5. PBDEs (Polybrominated dithyl ethers) are a group of chemicals used as a flame retardant. Found in TVs, computers, wire insulation and furniture foam. Exposure includes swallowing PBDE-contaminated dust and contact with this dust. Health effects might damage the liver, kidneys and brain. Reduce exposure by finding products without PBDE in it.

Worried you might have had too much exposure to one of these chemicals? Find a family practitioner near your home, who can help with a toxicology report.
