Particular about your toothpaste? According to a study published in the Journal of General Dentistry, some toothpastes contain triclosan, which has antibacterial agents and is better than regular fluoride toothpaste at reducing plaque and gingivitis.
ChicagoTribune.com, shares that even a toothpaste with benefits comes with risks. This toothpaste may expose its users to chemicals, which inspired the FDA to study the safety of triclosan. Triclosan has been linked to disruptions in hormonal function and might also spawn from bacteria resistance.
Other concerns are for the environment: when triclosan goes down the drain, it’s only partly removed from the wastewater treatment and can turn into an environmental contaminant. Among these toxic dioxins are some very serious, scary, cancer-causing properties and have the ability to destroy the immune system and mess with hormones.
In 1987, triclosan was added to commerical hand soap, and by 200 around 76 percent of the products were made with it. After all those years 96 percent of the triclosan chemicals were washed into our environment, including the Mississippi River where the dioxin levels have increased by almost 300 percent.
“Trace amounts of the most toxic dioxin molecule are contained in triclosan as an unwanted impurity and additional ones can be formed with the antimicrobial serving as a precursor,” said Rolf Halden, an associate professor at the Center for Environmental Biotechnology at Arizona State University.
