Do you workout regularly? Whether you are a hardcore athlete, you save your workouts for the weekends or you don’t focus on physical activity – it is important to protect your knees.

According to WebMD.com, there are six ways to save your knees:

  • Don’t be ignorant of your knee pain. When the pain stops your normal activity, you need to see a doctor.
  • Carrying extra weight. Every extra pound of weight puts five extra pounds of weight onto your knees. Extra weight can also heighten the chance of arthritis in the knees.
  • Finish out your physical therapy and REST. After an injury these two steps are crucial to recovery.
  • Don’t neglect your ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), the most commonly injured ligament in the knee. Seek trained professional help to avoid this devastating injury.
  • Pushing yourself too far. Gradually increase intensity or duration of your workout to avoid staining or injuring your knee.
  • Pay attention to all your muscles. By ignoring muscles around your knee can make them weak and lead to injury. When muscles around the kneecap, pelvis and hip are strong they stabilize the knee and keep things balanced.

“But knowing when you can and can’t ignore pain is key,” says sports medicine specialist Jordan Metzl, MD, from the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

Finding it difficult to cope with knee pain or a previous injury? Find a physical therapist near your home who can help get you back into your routine.
