Hoping to live to be 100? You may think it is either impossible or takes some serious changes in your life to do so. Well that is just not the case, a few simple tweaks is all it takes.
According to Shape.com, a team of demographers and doctors searched the globe for healthy, happy senior citizens, living in their 100s. Six secrets were revealed on how those lucky people were able to prolong their lives.
- Don’t hold back that laugh. Laughter reduces worry, relaxes blood vessels, lowers risk of heart attack and keeps you happy.
- Exercise should come naturally. None of the centenarians ran marathons or made exercise a huge stress on their lives. They just made sure to add simple exercises to their daily life, taking long walks, gardening and playing with their grand or great-grandchildren.
- Eat smart. Consume food only until you are 80 percent full, stock up on smaller plates, eat slowly, enjoy the foods and their flavors as well as the company you are eating with.
- Anybody have any nuts? Those who ate nuts five times per week had half the risk of heart disease and lived about two years longer than those who didn’t eat nuts. Walnuts, almonds and cashews are best.
- Who’s in your inner circle? Those you have closest to you will affect your lifestyle. Make sure you reconnect with your values, passions and strengths. Choose activities that make you happiest.
Making simple tweaks to your everyday lifestyle can tack eight to 10 years onto your life,” says Dan Buettner in his National Geographic bestseller, The Blue Zones.
