Do you have any children? If so then you probably understand the term: postpartum depression. The mother of your children may have been affected by this unfortunate condition, which overwhelms the post-pregnant mommy with anxiety, sadness and emptiness. New research has found that fathers are now being affected by this common condition as well.
According to Time.com, researchers at Eastern Virginia Medical school report that 10% of dads experience postpartum depression (PPD) after their child is welcomed into this world. When looked at a bit closer, fathers experience almost the exact same routine as the mother; sleep deprivation, stress, anxiety, nervousness, strain on the marriage, strain on work, etc. So it should seem perfectly acceptable for a father to succumb to these feelings.
“It is surprising and novel that the rate is much higher than most people would guess or expect,” says study author James Paulson. “This is a condition that is not recognized by many folks. Postpartum in men is an alien concept to most people.”
