Ever had food poisoning? If you have then you know exactly how miserable it is. Almost 80 million cases of food poisoning and 5,000 deaths are reported every year. It’s time to get a shield up to protect yourself from this avoidable sickness.

Health.com, has provided some tips on becoming more food conscious to avoid food poisoning:

  1. Shop smart: frozen/fridge sections should be last on the food shopping list, raw meat should be separately bagged, take groceries home as soon as possible
  2. Wash all fresh produce and your hands
  3. Prevent cross-contamination- prepare raw meat separately from other foods
  4. Stay away from raw eggs: almost 400 food poisoning outbreaks since 1990 are due to salmonella- that’s right no more raw cookie dough
  5. Internal temperature: check chicken and other dangerous meats on the inside before eating
  6. Rule 224: don’t leave food out longer than two hours, put in container less than two inches deep or use/freeze all leftovers before four days
  7. Be extremely careful when pregnant: no tuna, soft cheeses, etc
  8. Eat out carefully: health inspection is über important when dining out. New York City Board of Health is trying to push this envelope even further so the moment you choose a restaurant you’ll see a letter grade voting the health inspection

If you think you might have food poisoning first call poison control, then your family practitioner.
