Ever tried agave nectar? Stevia? The media has created a huge buzz about a few ingredients that might make your diet healthier. Ever wonder if the media is right or wrong? We’re here to unveil the truth!

Health.com has provided some answers to these questions:

  • Agave nectar: is a honey-like syrup made from a Mexican agave plant which can be used as an all-natural sweetener. This nectar can replace sugar in drinks and baked goods. This is perfect for diabetics because it has a low glycemic index, it is a great source of inulin and stomach-protecting probiotics.
  • Rooibos: a caffeine-free South African plant brewed as red tea. Starbucks now sells a rooibos latte. This tea is naturally sweet, lots of antioxidants, fights allergies and helps with skin problems.
  • Stevia: a sweetner made from the South American stevia plant. Truvia, PureVia, Odwalla and Breyers have taken advantage of this sweetener. Carb-free, great for diabetics, 300x sweeter than sugar with 0 calories! Pure flavor vs. artificial sugar substitutes, but some complained about a bitter aftertaste.
  • Salba seeds: related to the Chia Pet! Found in nuts/seeds section of grocery store, used in energy bars and salsa. Can mix into yogurt, cereal or on top of salads. Seeds contain a rich form of ALA omega-3 fatty acids, has anti-inflammatory benefits. High in fiber, gluten-free, non-allergenic and lots of protein.
  • Acai: a berry from palm trees in Central and South America. Found in juice, nutrition bars and cereal. Rich in antioxidants and healthy fat. Can be pricey but a great health source for special occasions.
