We all know that proper dental hygiene is extremely important, and without it, we run the risk of developing cavities or other dental problems. Plaque forms when “bacteria from decaying teeth attach themselves to the tooth enamel and form a sticky film…The bacteria that live in the plaque releases acids which weaken the tooth enamel and therefore increases the risk of cavity,” reports WorlDental.org.
WorlDental.org has listed several simple ways to help keep your mouth free of cavities:
- Use toothpaste that has plaque preventing ingredients. Toothpaste with the antibacterial substance triclosan can stay active in the mouth for up to 12 hours, therefore reducing plaque.
- Use polyphenols to prevent gum disease. Polyphenols such as cranberry juice, red wine, and green tea can reduce the formation of plaque and stop the bacteria that sticks to the teeth and causes cavities.
- Using olive oil when cooking can stop plaque from forming and prevent gum disease. Olive oil limits the formation of plaque and strengthens the teeth because it contains oleuropein, an antibacterial compound that stops the type of bacteria that causes bone loss and gum disease. Olive oil also covers the teeth with a film of molecules of fat which tends to prevent the formation of plaque.
- Chew gum that contains sugar substitutes such as Sorbitol or Xylitol because they reduce plaque and cavities.
Although some drinks, gums, and toothpastes are effective in reducing plaque, you still need to visit a dentist on a regular basis. Find a dentist near you to get your teeth cleaned.
