How many of you female readers take “the Pill”? This weekend “the Pill” celebrated it’s 50th anniversary. On May 9, 1960, the FDA officially approved the birth control pill for women.

According to Health.com, this magical pill was never meant to help women get jobs or control the size of a family. Many religious groups are still against using the contraceptive pill to prevent pregnancy. Some view the birth control pill as an anti-life stance. This pill was meant to help women choose their own path, to finally be in charge of when they’d like to start a family, how many children they’d prefer to have and when they’d like to stop having children.

It seems this would be a great thing, since there are so many families in our country who can barely afford to feed all of their children. This inexpensive pill, which Planned Parenthood proudly helps women receive, ultimately helps provide better lives for women and children. It finally gives women a chance to choose whether they even want to be a mother, which is a marvelous decision to be able to make. Not all women should have to reduce their sexual activity just because they do not want to be a mother.

“Since the Pill was approved by the FDA, it has radically changed women’s access to education, to employment and to having the size of family that they want,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, which led the effort to get the Pill approved. “It completely changed women’s ability to control their own destiny.”

So happy anniversary birth control pill! Thank you for providing us women with the ability to choose our own life. Looking for a different contraception option? Find that near your home.
