Having a hard time deciphering what is the right or wrong thing to eat? The media has put such hype on healthy eating that it has become difficult for people to understand which foods are best for them. As you all know, men and women are extremely different, which means women need to consume different nutrients than men.

WebMD.com has provided the top six super foods that women must eat to be strong and healthy:

  1. Low-fat yogurt: is packed with calcium, which benefits your digestive system, reduces risk of vaginal infections and stomach ulcers. Three servings is strongly suggested by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines. Skip the flavored varieties or ones with fruit on the bottom…they have way to much sugar.
  2. Fatty fish (aka salmon, sardines and mackerel): filled with omega-3 fatty acids which reduces risk of heart disease, depression, lupus and even Alzheimer’s disease
  3. Beans: low in fat, high in protein and fiber- may prevent heart disease and breast cancer. Beans might possibly help stabilize female hormones.
  4. Tomatoes (or watermelon, red grapefruit, red navel oranges): lycopene is the incredible nutrient in these delicious foods. Lycopene protects against prostate cancer, breast cancer and damaging UV rays.
  5. Vitamin D (fortified low-fat milk, OJ or healthy sunshine): vitamin D helps the bones absorb calcium, it also reduces risk of osteoporosis, diabetes, MS and tumors in the breast, colon or ovaries.
  6. Berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, cranberries): similar to wine, these berries shield your body against cancer. Eating these vitamin C, folic acid and lutein-rich berries is especially important during child-bearing years.

NYU nutritionist Tara Miller, MS, RD, agrees. “You have to read the whole label, look at all the ingredients and the portion sizes, before you know for sure just how healthy a food is.”
