Worried your baby has autism? New research by Emory University and Georgia Tech shows that a test can be done, by the parents of a potential autistic child, in just five minutes.

Rapid Attention Back and Forth Communication Test (Rapid ABC) is the new test which can engage a child through simple activities while testing attention-span, communication and recognition skills. This test is certainly not meant to replace the original test created by the American Academy of Pediatrics (the test takes about two hours,) but helps identifying those children who may be at risk earlier in life to get started on therapy, if needed.

Momlogic.com expert and pediatrician Dr. Alana Levine says, “Symptoms of autism spectrum disorders include impairments in social interaction and communication, but are also characterized by unusual behaviors like repetitive movements, hand-flapping and lack of eye contact. Earlier diagnosis and intervention is associated with better long-term outcomes.”

If you are at all worried that your child might have autism, do not rely on the Rapid ABC test, your child must receive a full comprehensive exam before being diagnosed. As always, call your family pediatrician immediately upon recognition of this disease.
