Remember the Atkins diet? When that became a huge hit everyone started looking at ‘carbs’ differently. Then the media made a huge deal about carbs and health companies started panicking, because of how their products were being seen by consumers.
EveryDayHealth.com, has helped provide the difference between good (aka complex) and bad (aka simple) carbohydrates:
- Carbohydrates are your primary energy source and should not be avoided
- There are two types of carbs: simple and complex… complex= whole grains, legumes which take longer to break down in the body
- Simple Carbs are packed with sugar and have very little nutritional value
- Fruits and veggies fall in the simple carb category but they have fructose in them which is a healthy, natural sugar
- Simple carbs to avoid are: white rice, white bread, sugar, candy, white pasta, soda, artificial syrups and white potatoes
- Finding the glycemic index of the food your eating is important
“Have brown rice instead of white rice, have whole-wheat pasta instead of plain white pasta,” says Sandra Meyerowitz, MPH, RD, a nutritionist and owner of Nutrition Works in Louisville, Ky.
