We all know that physical activity is great for our health, specifically our heart health, and now a new study suggests that walking might be “an important weapon for women in the fight against stroke,” reports Reuters. The study found that women who walked for 2 or more hours a week had a lower risk of stroke than those who walked less than two hours a week.

Lead researcher Jacob Sattelmair says the risk of stroke is 25 to 30 percent lower in people who were more physically active, and women who walked at a pace of 3 miles per hour or more had a 37 percent lower risk than those who walked at a slower pace of having any type of stroke. These findings are nothing new, but they do add to existing evidence that “moderate-intensity activity such as brisk walking is beneficial to the reduction of risks of strokes,” says Dr. Frank Hu, of the Harvard School of Public Health. Hu went on to say that this study should be motivation for people to get up and get moving.
