Little did the processed food innovators in the 40s and 50s know that they were slowly digging the graves of Americans to come. Thankfully, some huge things are happening in this country to turn this situation around. Some people are still unaware of how poisonous processed foods truly are for your body. If it isn’t something your grandmother would recognize on the label, then put it back. YES, that means frozen pizzas, frozen meals, mac ‘n cheese, chicken nuggets, etc.
Yahoo.com has strongly recommended nine different, commonly used ingredients to steer clear of in processed foods (because we know you might eat processed occasionally):
- Artificial coloring: made from coal/tar to enhance color- linked to allergic reactions, fatigue and skin rashes
- Artificial flavor: cheap chemical mixture to mock natural flavors- linked to eczema, hyperactivity and asthma
- Artifical sweetners (aka aspartame, Equal, NutraSweet, saccharin, Splenda, Sweet n Low, etc): highly-processed, chemically derived, 0-calorie sweetners in “diet” foods- can have reverse affect on metabolism, linked to cancer and hallucinations
- Benzoate preservatives: preserves fat from becoming rancid- linked to asthma, tumors and affecting estrogen levels
- Brominated vegetable oil: chemical which boosts flavor in many citric-based fruit and soft drinks- increases cholesterol, can damage, liver, testicles and heart
- High fructose corn syrup: cheap alternative to cane/beet sugar- might turn fructose into fat, increases risk of Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and cancer
- MSG- flavor enhancer (typical in Chinese food, salad dressing, frozen entrees and soup)- might stimulate appetite, cause headaches, nausea, edema and change in heart rate
- Olestra: indigestable fat sub used in fried/baked foods- inhibits nutrient absorption, linked to gastrointestinal disease, diarrhea and bleeding
- Shortening, hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated oils: industrially created fats used in 40,000+ food products in the U.S.- contain high levels of trans fats, raises bad cholesterol, lowers good cholesterol, contributes to risk of heart disease
