According to Reuters, a new study revealed that “the cost of imaging used on Medicare cancer patients is growing at twice the rate of overall cancer treatment costs as doctors order more scans and recommend more advanced tests.” This study is the first to examine the growing cost and use of scans performed on cancer patients.
Researchers said PET scans increased the fastest and that they also can cost six times more than a CT scan, an advanced type of X-ray. Also, cancer patients can only expect costs to continue growing because “as newer, more expensive imaging technologies are used more frequently, the overall cost of imaging is going to increase,” states Michaela Dinan, a researcher at Duke University. The research team also said that cancer-related costs are expected to grow faster than any other area of healthcare, which already costs the nation $228.1 billion annually.
