According to Reuters, the largest study “to date into the effects of mobile-phone usage on long-term health was launched on Thursday.” It will track nearly a quarter of a million people in several European countries for about 30 years. This study is different from previous studies that have focused on cell phone effects on people’s health because it will follow user’s behavior in real time; previous studies only asked people already suffering from cancer and other diseases about their past mobile phone use. This study will also be much longer and focus on long-term use.

Nearly 5 billion mobile phones are in use worldwide, and groups such as the World Health Organization, the American Cancer Society and the National Institutes of Health have found no evidence that cell phone use harms health, states Reuters. This study will look for connections to all kinds of diseases, including Alzheimer’s’, Parkinson’s and cancer. It will also examine how cell phone users are carrying their phone and whether they use hand-free kits. A spokesman for Britain’s Health Protection Agency said the study had the potential to give very reliable results, reports Reuters.

Find a doctor near you to discuss any questions or concerns you have about cell phone use on your health.
