Ever wonder why you hiccup, get a brain freeze, have goosebumps after you sneeze or why your foot falls asleep at certain angles? Luckily, a few doctors have come together to clear up all our bodies bizarre functions.
EverydayHealth.com has provided ten unexpected functions our bodies perform on a daily basis:
- Sneezing- Yes, you do always close your eyes when you sneeze. Sneezes send those irritants out of your nose at 100 mph!
- Hiccups- They occur when the diaphragm is irritated, which makes it contract making you breath in air.
- Ever woke up in the middle of the night with excruciating pain? A charley horse (or muscle cramp) in the thigh or calf is caused when the muscle has been overused.
- Brain Freeze- hate when you take a big swig of that frozen drink and get major pain in your temple area? This is caused by cold food touching the nerves located on the roof of your mouth, these trigger blood vessels in your head which immediately swell and cause temporary pain.
- Eye twitch- a spasm of the eyelid is a reaction of an abnormal nerve function. It can happen when one is tired, tense or if their eyes are sensitive to bright lights.
- Not so funny, funny bone…hate that strange pain you get when you bang your elbow on a hard surface? This unusual sensation is from hitting a nerve called the ulnar nerve.
- Wake up foot! When your body is at a particular angle, circulation can be cut off from different limbs of your body, causing your limb to “fall asleep,” but as soon as you change positions this limb will wake up – the pins and needles you feel is parestheisia.
- “Falling” Asleep? This sleep hallucination in which you are falling is quite common known as a hypnogogic hallucination.
- Ever seen a squiggly line or dots float in front of your eyes? These are common and will do no harm, they are caused by small clumps that form in your eyeballs (aka vitreous gel) – the squiggly line is the shadow that is cast form the back of your eye.
- Goosebumps- are triggered by cold air, a good scare or a fever. The hair around each hair follicle tightens up and pushes the hair straight up causing these little bumps.
Tired of bad eyesight? Find an optometrist to discuss LASIK eye surgery near your home.
