Do you ever find yourself finishing every morsel on your plate, even when you’re not hungry anymore? This is the mentality that was put in place generations ago. Today we need to change that way of thinking. In a nation that is striving to lose weight and eat healthier, finding food tips that can help stick to your healthy regime are crucial.
Health.com has provided a few ways to easily downsize your servings:
- Your favorite foods are usually those you have to pay close attention to. For instance if you love steak, eat no more than a deck of cards worth. This will help you keep your favorite foods in your diet but keep the calories at bay.
- Americans have been programmed to eat whatever is on their plate. We need to escape this motto. Use a smaller plate for your meals, that way you have to eat smaller portions.
- To avoid eating more after dinner, stick to an after-dinner schedule. Immediately brush your teeth or sip hot tea. This ritual will send a cue to your stomach that you’re finished eating for the day.
- Mind over-munching! Don’t let your stomach get the best of you, avoid the mind games by thinking of vegetables as the main course, protein as the side dish and carbs as an indulgence. Pretend your body is a dumpster for whenever you want to eat a second helping or dessert.
“We eat whatever portion is placed before us,” says David Levitsky, PhD, an obesity researcher at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
