Shockingly, a lot of people who have a stroke don’t even realize they are having one. People who are unaware that they are having a stroke are most likely suffering from a minor stroke in which the symptoms are much less severe than a normal stroke. Symptoms from a minor stroke include trouble speaking, vertigo, balance problems, and temporary weakness or numbness of an arm or leg, reports HealthDay.com.

Minor strokes normally don’t cause permanent brain damage, and “early treatment of these conditions reduces the risk of a more serious stroke,” states HealthDay.com. But the scary thing is so many people don’t even realize they are having a stroke so they don’t seek medical help. According to HealthDay.com, less than half of patients with a minor stroke seek medical attention within three hours of symptom onset.

A minor stroke occurs when a blood clot temporarily clogs an artery and blocks blood flow to the brain. Study author Arvind Chandratheva says that the findings of the study “indicate a lack of public awareness” that a minor stroke is a medical emergency, and also that there is a need for more public education.

Talk to a doctor near you to discuss ways to lower your risk of having a stroke.
