It’s not an easy task to quit smoking, but it is an easy habit to pick up and those who are depressed are much more likely to start. HealthDay.com reports that the connection between smoking and depression is very strong and very real. In general, adults are more likely to smoke, but “people aged 20 and older with depression are twice as likely as others to be cigarette smokers,” report the researchers from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Over time the link between depression and smoking has been growing with 43 percent of depressed adults smoking, and only 22 percent of adults without depression smoking. And those adults who are depressed are much less likely to quit than smokers who are not depressed, reports HealthDay.com. The study wasn’t able to pin-point why depressed adults were more likely to smoke, but some research suggests that “they might be self-medicating, with the cigarettes somehow acting as a calming or relaxing mechanism,” states HealthDay.com.
If you are trying to quit smoking, find a doctor near you who can help.
