Every now and then people eat the wrong food and suddenly are battling diarrhea. This painful, embarrassing problem usually passes on its own in a few days if not less. If this problem lasts longer than a few days then a doctor should be notified.
EverydayHealth.com has helped out by providing some ways to treat diarrhea:
Be aware that while dealing with diarrhea you’ll be dehydrated from losing lots of fluid.
- Choose sports drinks with electrolytes
- Drink lot of water
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol or sugar filled drinks
Eating a bland diet helps:
- Follow the BRAT diet: bananas, rice, applesauce and toast (crackers and plain mashed potatoes are good foods to incorporate too)
- Greasy foods and foods sweetened with sorbitol can irritate the bowel
Travelers diarrhea can usually be handled by taking over the counter meds like Pepto-Bismal
“However, severe diarrhea, diarrhea that lasts more than a few days, or prolonged episodes of diarrhea are reasons to see a doctor, as they could indicate something more serious,” says Stephen Bickston, MD, AGAF, professor of internal medicine and director of the inflammatory bowel disease program at Virginia Commonwealth University Health Center in Richmond, Va.
Afraid that your diarrhea is more serious than you think? Find a gastroenterologist near your home to help.
