Many have watched the news as our First Lady, Michelle Obama, has made a large statement about changing our youth with her “Let’s Move!” campaign; teaching children how important physical activity and nutrition are.

According to ChicagoTribune.com, Chicago public schools are planning to banish the nacho bar, do-nuts and Pop-Tarts from the school menu. New standards from the Chicago Public Schools Nutrition Support Service has decided to address the improper nutrition that their 40,000 students have been consuming. Many school districts within Chicago have an inordinate number of overweight and obese children which has given this movement quite the push.

Starting in June, the daily nacho bar will only be served once a week in high schools and once a month in elementary schools. Sweet packaged desserts will only be served as weekly treats but do-nuts and Pop-Tarts are banned completely.

“The process to expand healthier options started two years ago when we started with removing the use of fryers in all schools, introduction of fresh fruit daily, etc. …”Monique Bond, spokeswoman for CPS, wrote in an e-mail.

Moms: don’t rely on schools to feed your children healthy food. Take charge at home, one of the smartest avenues is by packing your child’s lunch yourself.
