According to Reuters, experts warned that “bacterial infections, hepatitis B and C, and possibly even HIV are being transmitted via acupuncture through the use of contaminated needles, cotton swabs and hot packs.” Because so many infections are being transmitted through acupuncture, microbiologists at the University of Hong Kong have called for “tighter infection control measures,” which include the use of disposable needles, skin disinfection procedures and aseptic techniques, says Reuters.
Acupuncture is practiced all over the world, but originated in ancient China. It is used to treat pain, and is “based on the theory that inserting and manipulating fine needles at specific points in the body helps to promote the flow of “Qi” or energy,” reports Reuters. Most infections people suffered from weren’t serious, but 5 to 10 percent of patients did report having serious problems such as joint destruction, multi-organ failure, flesh-eating disease and paralysis.

Looking closely at this article I see that the source is Hong Kong and that one of the procedures that are being done is to use disposable needles. Just to let you know any Chinese Medicine Practitioner here in the states worth anything uses ONLY sterile, disposable needles. In 8 years of practice I have yet to have an infection blamed on acupuncture! It has been proven to be safe and effective.
Hey Jocelyn! Thanks for reading!
Glad to hear in 8 years of practice you’ve never had an infection blamed on acupuncture! I’ve never had acupuncture, but it’s good to know that it has been proven to be safe and effective with the appropriate needles.
Do you know much about using acupuncture as a way to quit smoking?
