Ponder no more! According to recent studies, coffee is good for you! “Overall, the research shows that coffee is far more healthful than it is harmful,” says Tomas DePaulis, PhD, research scientist at Vanderbilt University’s Institute for Coffee Studies.

Coffee can reduce disease risk, including Parkinson’s disease and diabetes, while also dropping the risk of liver cirrhosis. Studies have found coffee can stop a headache, boost mood, and prevent cavities.

Does this sound too good to be true? There is more!

Coffee can also have the ability to boost athletic performance.  The caffeine can help motivate and give you energy during your exercise.  Physiologist and longtime coffee researcher Terry Graham, PhD, of the University of Guelph in Canada says that caffeine, “may include signaling you to ignore fatigue or recruit extra units of muscle for intense athletic performance.” This will increase productivity in your specific exercise.

I recently played in a Water polo tournament in Hungary, myself along with some teammates enjoyed a quick espresso before the match. My body reacts to the caffeine by boosting my awareness.  Coffee can have a different effect on everyone, so it is important to discover how your body reacts to different substances.  In order for me to perform best in the water, I need to be feeling great.

If you are injured due to prior exercise, get checked out.
