According to Maggie Fox from Reuters, the special U.S. Court of Federal Claims ruled on Friday that vaccines containing a mercury-based preservative called thimerosal cannot cause autism. The family of an Oregon boy was seeking reimbursement, but their quest was put to an end when the special court ruled that vaccines could not have caused his autism. The court has ruled against several families who also felt that vaccines were the cause of their children’s autism. The parents of the autistic children said they had been “misled by physicians who are guilty, in my view, of gross medical misjudgment,” reports Fox.

There is no cure or good treatment for the mysterious condition of autism which “affects as many as one in 110 U.S. children. The so-called spectrum ranges from mild Asperger’s Syndrome to severe mental retardation and social disability,” states Fox. The U.S. Institute of Medicine has stated several times that there is no connection between vaccines and autism; however, Autism Speaks, an advocacy group, says they “won’t completely abandon the theory that vaccines might cause autism,” says Fox.

If you think your child may be showing signs of autism, find a pediatrician near you who can help.
