Allergies are such a downer and so hard to pinpoint – not to mention to get rid of. Thankfully, Health.com has provided several ways to keep allergies at bay inside your home:
- Utilize A/C or air purifier with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter
- Air out the house and keep as dry as possible
- Vacuum and dust twice a week. If possible use a HEPA vacuum which will remove dust-mite particles and pollen (wear a mask)
- SteerĀ clear of using carpet inside your home, opt for hardwood floors, linoleum, or tile
- Mop daily, vacuum ceiling, closet, walls and back of furniture once a week to diminish dust
- Instead of hard cleaners, use baking soda, mineral oil, club soda or vinegar to clean
- Have pest control services come every so often to make sure cockroaches are not festering in your home- they stir up allergy reactions
- If at all possible, avoid wood-burning stove smoke, tobacco smoke and kerosene heater fumes
- Make sure to repair any water-damages around the house that could cause mold
- Clean air ducts on a regular basis
- Remove the following items from the bedroom that collect dust: stuffed toys, pictures, books, knickknacks and/or fake flowers
- Avoid using wool or down blankets or feather pillows
- Wash sheets, and pillow cases at least once a week in hot water
- Cover your mattress and box spring with a dust-proof case and wipe them clean once per week
- Remove plants and fish tanks from the bedroom which increase humidity
If these tips do not help, contact an allergist. Find one near your home to get tested for various allergies. Yearning to own a pet, but afraid of getting an allergic reaction? Find a list of hypoallergenic dogs just for you!
