The jealousy-inducing-weight-loss that some mothers can pull off after birth has, for some time, been a topic of debate. Some attribute it to factors such as genes, and spending an exorbitant amount of time in the gym. However, a trending idea in weight loss is the idea that breast feeding can aid in weight loss. To some this may seem absurd, but recent studies suggest that breast feeding could in fact promote post birth weight loss.
A study completed last year of 36,000 Danish women found that the more a mother breast feeds, the less weight she will retain six months after the birth. The factors taken into account in order to provide a more accurate result were: whether a woman was overweight before the pregnancy, weight gain while expecting, and the duration of nursing. All women may have their own ideas on breast feeding and some may have no clue because nursing can be a confusing topic. An overview article can be be found on the NY Times.
For those scratching your head wondering how breast feeding can cause weight loss, according to doctors, making milk requires the use of 500 calories per day, that is nearly a quarter of an average, healthy diet. The added daily calorie burn of nursing is the factor that contributes to the weight loss. However, this can be negated as a result of habit, some mothers continue to eat in excess after birth, which can detract from the possible results of breast feeding. In order to create a healthy diet for you and your child while nursing, keep these foods in mind while grocery shopping.
