Maternity Wards: 1960 vs. 2010

by Lauren Meyers on March 4, 2010 · 0 comments

According to HealthKey.Com, maternity wards have come light-years from the 1960s. You not only are allowed wi-fi, but massage therapists, whirlpool tubs and a portrait photographer. Medical centers now focus on creating a birthing plan with the mother, some mothers prefer to have a water birth when other moms prefer a regular birth.

Some mothers prefer having a doula present or a female doctor vs. a male doctor. All of these things have dramatically changed since 1960 when women knew very little about child birth, birthing plans and women gynecologists were far and few between.

Hospitals also rely on women who’ve given birth to remain loyal for other health care procedures involving their children or any other relative they care for. Keeping maternal women happy can be crucial for a hospital’s well being.

“As we look at the decision makers in the family, we want to make sure we are meeting their needs, as an entry point into the system,” said Mike Phelps, vice president of diversified services at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia, MN.
